Breast Cancer & Its Impact on Marriage

In January 2007, we became members of a club that we really didn't want to join.  My wife, Carol, was
diagnosed with breast cancer and we became a breast cancer couple.

The month of January was an emotional roller coaster ride for both of us, because we didn't know.
We didn't know if it really was cancer.  If it was cancer, we didn't know how advanced it was.  We
didn't know what the treatment(s) would involve.

Our emotions covered the entire spectrum.  On one hand I was pleased because Carol's annual
mammogram had caught it early.  On the other hand, my wife of 35 years had cancer and could die.

Samaritan Cancer Center provided us a 3-ring binder with detailed information about how to deal
with all the issues associated with cancer.  In the resources section was a book that has been worth
its weight in gold to me.  It is titled Breast Cancer Husband:  How To Help Your Wife (and Yourself)
during Diagnosis, Treatment, and Beyond, by Mark Silver, published by Rodale Books, ISBN
1-57954-833-4.
